Bredonborough Here comes the flood

12.20

Bredonborough.

Here comes the flood, indeed.

A morning of changeable skies, with some receding of the waters.

The flood plain opposite the end of the garden, completely covered in water, can be seen through greenery…

All looks good…

… and then you see the water through the arch & through the cherry orchard…

Fortunately, the town centre is fine…

Perhaps many of us in the first world have, mostly, forgotten the power of Nature. We are being reminded.

17.53  A gentle afternoon for us.

The flood action on the Avon is easing but the problems are getting worse downriver. The Avon & the Severn meet at Tewkesbury, which is underwater.

Upton-on-Severn is under, with further problems anticipated as water comes down from the Welsh mountains. Gloucester has major problems.

18.17  A walk down the garden with T & a large rabbit, driven up-garden, leapt under the box hedge by the fountain.

What’s this?

The water table in the cellar of Ian’s secondhand bookshop has risen above the floor. Books placed there 20 years ago are now waterlogged. Ian is philosophical while an old leatherbound holds the pipe in place as water is slowly pumped out…

Yesterday, all that was visible was the roof of the red car.

Then out to Parents Willcox, half a mile or so up river I…

They were being visited by boating pal Ray, who has spent the day with a friend rescuing the boats at the boat club. One boat has completely disappeared, to where no one knows. The lock, which allows boats to move between water levels, is covered. Boats can travel above it: there is currently only one water level.

The longboats moored at the pub next door…

… have been tied to the bank with step ladders.

But the weather looks good I…

A rescue helicopter has spent over an hour slowly checking the river from about half-a-mile up, down to the bridge. It has been over us every 10-15 minutes & only just moved on…
